Bent County Historical Society is proud to announce the winners of the 55th annual essay contest.  This contest encourages students to learn more about Colorado History in Bent County with research and personal interviews.  Bent County 7th Grade winners were:

Emilee Smith, first place $25, homeschooled by Tamara Smith, for her essay, “The History of Shamrock School.”

Bent County Historical Society Essay Contest Winners seconews.org Mia Quintana, second place $20, Las Animas Middle School, for her essay, “Boggsville & Santa Fe Trail Day.”

Bent County Historical Society Essay Contest Winners seconews.org Cade Routh, third place $15, Las Animas Middle School, for his essay, “The Famous Ken Curtis of Las Animas.”

Bent County Historical Society Essay Contest Winners seconews.org Griffin Boyd, honorable mention $10, Las Animas Middle School, for his essay, “The Best Family.”

Because of the pandemic, no event was held for the students to read their winning essays.  Individual pictures were taken, and they were videotaped reading their essays.  The pictures, tapes, and winning essays are filed in the Heritage Library at the Museum.

There were 19 essays submitted and judged.  We thank the panel of judges who were George Eidinger, Diane Baublits and Joyce Brooks, that took the time to read all the essays.  We especially thank the teachers, Tamara Smith and Tyson Vigil, for encouraging the students to participate.

The winning essay will be published in the next Bent County Chronicle.  Contact the John W. Rawlings Heritage Center and Museum if you have any questions at 456-6066.
