65th Otero Arts Festival Visual Arts Call For Entries

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE .............................................................. March 22, 2021

LA JUNTA — The 65th annual Otero Arts Festival invites all artists grades 7-12 to participate in a juried art festival March 30-31 & April 1 at the Student Center Rizzuto Banquet Room on the Otero Junior College campus. Entries will be accepted on Friday, March 26 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entries are free and open to all area students grades 7-12.

This year there are a couple of things different due to the pandemic that everyone has been experiencing over the last year. First our location for this year’s festival will be the OJC Student Center Rizzuto Banquet room and second we will be taking entries during staggered times for the area schools. This will eliminate the rush of entries coming in at 1 p.m. Social Distancing and masks are required for this event.

Area schools will bring entries to the intake at the following times:

11 a.m., Cheraw and Crowley County Schools

12 p.m., Fowler, John Mall, Kit Carson and La Junta Schools

1 p.m., McClave, Pioneer Christian, Rocky Ford and all Homeschool students

2 p.m., Manzanola and Swink Schools

3 p.m., Lamar, Las Animas and Wiley Schools

4 p.m., Granada, Holly, Eads, and all other schools

The Otero Arts Festival showcases visual arts, the creations that we can see. These art forms are very common and extremely diverse, from the artwork that hangs on your wall to the sculpture on a stand. The visual arts include mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and printmaking. Many of these pieces of art are created to stimulate us through a visual experience.

The Otero Arts Festival features works of art submitted by middle and high school students from all over southeast Colorado. Students from 10 Colorado counties including Otero, Crowley, Bent, Las Animas, Baca, Prowers, Kiowa, Lincoln, Cheyenne and Kit Carson are expected to participate in this year’s event.

All area students, grades 7-12, are encouraged to enter the Otero Arts Festival. Entries for the art contest will be accepted on Friday March 26th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Student Center Rizzuto Banquet room on the Otero Junior College campus. Students may have one entry for each medium/technique with a maximum of six entries total per student. Entries must be labeled and hung per the guidelines that are posted on the OJC website at: http://www.ojc.edu/OteroArtsFestival.aspx

The jurors will award over 600 ribbons for this annual arts festival to the anticipated entries from middle school and high school artists of southeastern Colorado. They also choose the recipients of Best of Show High School and Middle School and Outstanding Senior Portfolio ribbons. Judging will take place on Saturday, March 27 with public viewing of the art show to begin on Tuesday, March 30 at 8 a.m. The exhibit will remain open to the public March 30-31 and April 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then again at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There is no cost for admission. The public is invited to visit the festival and view the outstanding work the students have created. Visitors will be required to wear masks and use appropriate social distancing while visiting the exhibit.
