LA JUNTA — In 2003, the El Pomar Foundation established Regional Partnerships with the vision of creating community impact by engaging local leaders in proactive philanthropy to better serve the needs of Colorado. There are 11 Councils representing all 64 of Colorado’s counties. Each council provides direct grant recommendations to El Pomar’s Trustees, with the potential for a combined annual impact of more than $2 million across the state.
Regional Council members are charged with utilizing their expertise and networks to identify community issues and propose solutions. The Southeast Regional Council represents nine counties: Baca, Bent, Crowley, Huerfano, Kiowa, Las Animas, Otero, Prowers and Pueblo. Since their inception, the Regional Councils have been able to invest more than $28 million in their home communities. They hope to be able to continue to leverage their strengths to improve their ability to support the development of livable communities to work, play and stay.
“I am humbled and honored to support the El Pomar Foundation,” Alvarez said. “The purpose of the foundation to enhance, encourage, and promote the current and future well-being of the people of Colorado really resonates with me. I am delighted to play a positive role in being a voice for our rural communities.”
Alvarez has been selected to complete a three year term on the Southeast Regional Council. It is currently made up of 11 members. The Southeast Council endeavors to remain flexible with its funding to meet the needs of the population. According to their website, in the past year, the Council has focused on funneling its efforts into emergent needs especially to the communities who have been deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. They contribute through organizations such as Sangre de Christo Hospice, Mt. Carmel Health Wellness and Community Center, and the Senior Resource Development Agency: Pueblo Inc. They also support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pueblo County’s workforce development program, the 16th Judicial District’s truancy program, and the Colorado State Patrol Foundation’s “Alive at 25” safe driving program to continue the Council’s dedication to youth development.
