Obituary

Vera Grace Garrett, 96 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at her La Junta home surrounded by members of her family. She was born on January 3, 1925 in Olney Springs, CO to Joseph Dayton & Edithe (Glens) Conrad.

The most important things to Vera were her family, her friends and her faith. Her favorite hymn was, "Come Thou Fount," which her mother sang to her as a lullaby. She found much comfort in the Psalms and Psalm 23 in particular, especially in the later years of her life.

Vera was raised in Olney Springs, CO and graduated from Olney Springs High School. She earned an Associate’s Degree from Pueblo Junior College as well as an Associate’s Degree from Otero Junior College. In addition to being a devoted and loving wife and mother, she worked at the Fowler Nursing Home, the Otero Junior College Film Library and taught many children piano. Her love of children was further demonstrated by the many years she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of and faithfully attended the La Junta Baptist Tabernacle as long as her health permitted. She was a longtime church pianist, organist and vocalist. She loved to write and shared that love with others by teaching the Write Your Life class. An author herself, she wrote, "Spokes from a Hub," "Adventures in Grace," "Remembering Billy Garrett," "Yucklets and Noodles," and numerous works of poetry and magazine articles.

She is survived by her children, Connie Suarez of La Junta; Maggie (Ronnie) Dail of Bartlesville, OK; David (Marylou) Garrett of Omaha, NE; Steve (Gale) Garrett of Albuquerque, NM; Phyllis (Doug) Morris of Pueblo, CO; Miriam (Joel) Westbrook of Colorado Springs, CO and Jim Garrett of Dodge City, KS; 18 grandchildren, Rebecca Suarez, Rachel (Scott) Jones, Angel Arkfeld Garrett, Joshua Garrett, Eric (Melinda) Garrett, Tim Garrett, Micah Morris, Aaron (Danielle) Morris, Hannah Morris, Holly Morris, Adam Morris, Grace Morris, Heather Westbrook, Za'chary (Iyah) Westbrook, Bethany (Joshua) Skoog, Matthew (Melanie) Garrett and Mark (Sydney) Garrett; 17 great-grandchildren, Greg (Charlotte) Suarez, Jonny (Destiny) Suarez, Braydon Jones, Nathanael Arkfeld, Leyna Garrett, Jaela Garrett, Avery L.Garrett, Elyse Garrett, Liam Garrett, Leif Garrett, Igraine Rosebrook, Torah Skoog, Jovie Skoog, Amelia Skoog, Adeline Garrett, Avery G.
