Otero County Sheriff Responds to Rocky Ford Shooting

Rocky Ford, Colorado – May 17,2021.  The Otero County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting in the 29000 block of Otero County Road 20 outside of Rocky Ford.  Upon arrival, 22 year old Joseph Barela was found with a gunshot wound to his head.  Barela was transported to the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center for treatment.  Barela was subsequently transferred to UC Health Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs where he died on May 18th. 

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation as a possible homicide.  Any person with information concerning this shooting is asked to please contact the Otero County Sheriff’s Office at (719) 384-5941.
