Nomination Narrative: Alex is a freshman at OJC. Since all of his classes are online. Alex is a very big introvert and prefers his own company. As this year was a challenge to get volunteers for the Children’s Literacy Program: La Junta Literacy Project he saw how stretched I was and offered to help with the program.

At first he did all my heavy lifting ie; boxes, supplies, books, etc. Alex always set up the chairs and tables in the Auxiliary room and put them away afterwards.  He also became our door monitor and would let students and tutors in as needed. As we got short of tutors for students, he stepped up and took the excess students that did not have a tutor. Alex shows up every day from Monday through Thursday from 2:30-5:30 for this program.

He has blossomed in this role and is more comfortable working with other people and children. This has become very meaningful for him. The best part is that he doesn’t complain about his responsibilities and always shows up and does what is asked of him. Even when he looks tired. He shows up and puts up with whatever comes his way. For that I am very proud of him.

(The intention of the Communities That Care Youth Recognition Award is to acknowledge youth for their contributions to community outside of just athletics and academics and instead focus on some of the ways they make the world better.)
