Valley residents might remember Ken Newens, who for many years was a veterinarian out of La Junta.

Ken has recently written a novel, Alice's Boys, published by Deer Vale Publishing. It is now available for purchase in both paperback and ebook form from online publishers.

According to the press release, “Alice's Boys chronicles the life and extraordinary times of Alice Stevens, a runaway from her parents’ ranch in 1890’s New Mexico Territory. Her family traverses fifty years of coming of age in an America that came of age as well.  Through two world wars and two depressions, her family moves forward, all the while carefully guarding the secrets of their encounters with an alien race, culminating in the most celebrated alien encounter of the twentieth century.

When asked how he would describe the book, Newens chuckles, ‘Historical-western-romance-military-science fiction? Not knowing any better, I thought it would be fun for a first attempt at a novel.  And it was, despite the work. Weaving fictional characters through real history, from the last days of the wild west into the age of nuclear weapons, not to mention the fact that they have to deal with the fantastic encounters with things not of this world, was an adventure to say the least.’ The end result is an American adventure in the form of Alice's Boys.”

This writer was fortunate to have received an advance copy of the novel. I found it to be very well-written, with engaging characters, and a plot that somehow manages to tie together all the elements into a cohesive, enjoyable whole that makes it hard to put down. The unexpected ending made me laugh out loud. It is one of the best first novels I’ve read, and it’s better than many of the books I’ve read in the past year by more established authors. It would make a wonderful Father’s Day present!
