Tuesday, 28 July 2021, American Legion District Commander Jody Bracy met with State Representative Stephanie Luck and her Administrative Assistant Carolyn Martin to discuss a list of veterans issues.

Among the topics discussed were:
  • Supporting legislation to add Gold Star spouses and 'disabled and unemployable' to the Homestead Act
  • Supporting legislation to address veteran suicide prevention and better access to mental health care.
  • Veteran Treatment Courts
  • Restoration of the $7.9 million swept from the Fort Logan land sale to veteran use.
  • Restoration of the $3 million to the Veteran Trust Fund
  • Restoration of the $1 million to the Veteran Assistance Grants Program
  • Establishing the Colorado Division of Veteran Affairs Women's Veteran Program
  • Establishing and supporting legislation to allow veterans to also use their VA Identification card or Military ID to have their branch of service on their driver's license. Currently, you can only use your DD-214.
  • Accountability for and restoration of having IN PERSON providers in our VA Clinics in La Junta, Lamar and Burlington, per the contract when Fort Lyon Veteran Hospital was closed.
  • Oversight and accountability of the Community Care Program
  • Also discussed several other issues.
Representative Luck and Ms Martin also spoke briefly Tuesday evening with Otero County Veteran Service Officer Jay Scott. Jay and Representative Luck will be setting up a meeting in the near future to further discuss the above listed items and more.

Advocating for the needs of veterans is one of the things that the American Legion is best known for.  Here in Colorado the American Legion works closely with the VFW and the United Veterans Coalition (UVC) on legislation. District 1 would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for helping us be more knowledgeable on the proposed veteran and veteran family legislation in the Colorado State Legislature.

If you need assistance on claims we encourage you to reach out to a Veteran Service Officer.
