Students Returning to Otero College Campus

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ............................................................. August 12, 2021

LA JUNTA — Fall Semester 2021 courses are scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 16, 2021 in person. According to Gary Addington, dean of students, several of the athletic teams have moved on to campus already and the rest of the students living in campus residence halls will be moving in this weekend.

The College will be hosting an all-campus barbeque on Sunday, Aug. 15, as well as several other events for students throughout the week. “Students are encouraged to get involved on campus.” Addington said. “We offer a wide variety of activities, events, and clubs. There are support services and advisors available to help people acclimate to college life. We are excited to be back on campus at full capacity and are ready to go. We’ll still be utilizing some of our COVID-19 safety precautions just to make sure our students and staff are protected.”

Otero College is asking that students and staff alike wear face coverings for the first two weeks of courses as a precautionary measure as classrooms fill with students.

Dr. Timothy Alvarez, president at Otero, indicated that face coverings will only need to be worn while in indoor group settings. “Our hope is to protect students, faculty, and staff and prevent any possible transmission of COVID. This is done as a precautionary measure, as we have hundreds of students arriving from all over the world. We want to do everything in our power to make sure that we can remain on campus and in-person this semester. Face-to-face connections between students and staff are imperative for student development, we want to be able to foster meaningful relationships.”

After two weeks, campus administration will evaluate the situation and hopes to be able to remove the requirement. Otero continually monitors the information coming from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Colorado Governor’s Office and the Otero County Health Department.

Opening activities at the college include Quick Tips, which help students navigate their student portals, class information and schedules, helps them get connected with support services and get information about financial aid. Look for Otero students and employees to take part in the local parades this year. Students hand out home schedules for fall athletics as well as candy. Otero welcomes all new and returning students and wishes them an enjoyable and successful year.
