Library Patron and Donor Honored

A ribbon cutting for a special section of the Las Animas-Bent County library honoring retired teacher and long-time library board member Kaye DeMaio-Hays was held at the Las Animas-Bent County Library Wednesday. A reception followed.

DeMaio-Hays recently made a monetary donation to the library to be used for book purchases. In addition to the books purchased by the library using the donation, she also donates books she’s read to the library. One of the library board members noted that she probably has given more books to the library than the library has purchased from her monetary donation. Books will be purchased from the donation over the next several years.

Because of her generous donation, the library board decided to create a special place in the library for the books. This new section has been named “Kaye’s Korner.” All the books in the section have a special sticker on the front: “A Kaye’s Korner book. Donated by Kaye DeMaio-Hays.” Fittingly, the stickers are purple, as was the ribbon, as purple is her favorite color.

DeMaio-Hays retired from the Las Animas School District in 2007 after 38 years of service. Starting out as a high school English teacher, she later transferred to the middle school to teach language arts, and then become the middle school reading instructor. She said that was by far her favorite job: “It was the most fun.”

She also served on the library board for several years and has been an integral part of the library’s reading group since it began in 2008.
