Dexter Fay McNeff, 86, of La Junta, passed away on August 25, 2020 at the Crowley County Nursing Home in Ordway, CO. He was born March 9, 1934 in Pritchett, CO to Albert & Myree (Bonewell) McNeff.

He attended Stanton County High School in Johnson, KS. He went on to learn welding at Stoody Welding School in CA, Smith Welding School in MN, Tractor Training Service in OR and then at Trinidad Junior College in CO.

Dexter once said that welding was a part of every job he ever held. Starting at the age of 12 on his father’s farm in Pritchett, until his retirement as a Welding Instructor from OJC. Even during his retirement, he worked hard as a metal artist who created award winning plow disc art, sculptures of western scenes from horseshoes. Then he would cut name signs from heavy sheets of metal, braising the letters for many of his family and friends. He was truly an artist and engineer of his craft.

Dexter was fortunate to have found love twice in his life. He married Betty Kiesler in August of 1954. They had three children together, Randy, Lynn, and Tina. After Betty’s death, he married Janet Millard in December of 1984, and became a stepfather to her five children, Greg, Susan, Jay, John, and Becky.

He belonged to the Old Car Club and was an avid car lover, owning three antique vehicles that he restored. He was a member of the Elks Club, and was a main sponsor for the Rodeo Club through OJC for many years. He loved to take his camper with his wife Jan to Blue Mesa in the summer and was avid fisherman. They were also “snowbirds” and drove south for a few months every winter. He was well loved and will be missed.

Dexter is survived by his wife Janet Millard-McNeff of La Junta; children, Randy (Shirley) McNeff of Longmont, CO; Lynn McNeff of La Junta, CO; Tina McNeff-Follmer of Cheraw, CO; stepchildren, Susan (Peter) Mathewson of La Junta, CO; John (Kareen) Millard of Boulder, CO; Becky (Perry) Branch of Erie, CO; brother, Dewey McNeff of Arvada, CO; sister, Donna Roberts of Canon City, CO; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; & 2 great, great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Betty McNeff; brothers, Darrel & Dorval McNeff; and stepson, Greg Millard.
