Annual Bent’s Old Fort Meeting January 15th
 
The Bent's Fort Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association will hold their Annual Meeting January 15, 2022 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the JW Rawlings Heritage Center and Museum, 560 Bent Avenue, Las Animas, CO 81054.
 
During the business meeting, Election of officers will take place and there will be items for sale including Ron Kil's Print for the Santa Fe Trail 200th, Symposium Medallions, and Symposium bags.
 
You can also purchase Bent's Fort Chapter vest, price $45.
 
Lunch will be catered in and will cost $10.
 
At 1PM, following lunch, John Steinle will present his talk, "Most All Proves Fatal: Pandemics on the Santa Fe Trail."
 
During the presentation John will tell about how the Santa Fe Trail, as a crossroad of nationalities and cultures, made it a fertile breeding ground for disease.
 
Attacks of malaria, typhoid, dysentery, and tuberculosis were well known, and the most dreaded diseases, small pox and cholera caused enormous loss of life.
 
Initially from Ohio, John studied and worked there in fine arts for several years before switching careers. Returning to college he received a master's degree in Museum and Archival Management.
 
John worked in museums in both Ohio and Colorado before retiring in 2016. He has also authored and co-authored several books.
 
Note, the presentation will be open to the public at 1PM.
