Light Pillar Phenomenon Over Swink Schools

The Southeast Colorado sky went wild with a light show created by tiny floating ice crystals reflecting a bright light source, commonly called "light pillars."

They occur when conditions are just right - clear skies filled with frozen crystals of precipitation with just enough wind and not too much snowfall to lose visibility and a strong light source.

Ice pillars only happen when conditions are cold enough that the air in the atmosphere holds nearly-invisible ice crystals in suspension next to bright lights.

This evening there were vaporous refractions of light crystals dancing over Swink, Colorado thanks to the blazing bright football field lights so bright they were reflecting on the frozen field rows.

Since the Light source is not natural in this case, these light pillars might just be considered to be light pollution...

...Then again the Southeast Colorado Sky is known for its darkness, it's clear visibility provided by a high elevation, and a lack of light pollution creating optimal star-gazing.
