Swink Drama - Fussin An A-Feudin Delivers Hillbilly Laughs
By: Adrian Hart
Directed by Bonnie Grossen, the Swink All-School Musical brought the laughter to the Ed Stafford Theatre at Otero College in La Junta on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022.
This year’s K-12 musical was a mountain side slide of one liners in "Fusin' An' A-Feudin" by Tim Kelly, with music and lyrics by Bill Francouer.
There's Flyin Hot Lead Trouble in Lonesome Polecat, a town that's honestly not much of anything except for two families who happen to be feuding hillbillies.
Before we get too far...you should know Pa Calhoon (Christian Barnhart) has a trigger word, "Hillbilly," that sets him into a rage.
Some city folk find themselves involved in the turmoil...Sally Marriweather (Bridget Briscoe) is in town after the story to save her failing publishing company. While Dan the life insurance salesman (Austin Patton) has a hidden agenda.
There's romance too. Afterall it is "A Hillbilly Feud with a Romeo & Juliet Story."
In this more rustic retelling Lee Roy (Noah Nunez Rebel) is a curly haired Romeo and Emmy Lou (Bethany Taullie) is the lovestricken Juliet.
The Calhouns and Tollivers have spent 200 years fighting and feuding and no one knows why...maybe Antiquity Wormwood (Emilia Smith Pumalpa) knows...
Thanks to the staff and students hard work at rehearsals the musical numbers filled the stage..and the drama students brought the audience in close with unexpected duets.
This show was such a hit that maybe at the next Swink Drama Dinner Theatre they will feature some Lonesome Polecat cuisine. Then again from this sampling of dialogue from the locals that might not be a good idea:
"He doesn't like to take a bath because the soap gets the water dirty."
"I told him a person could eat dirt cheap, so he ate some dirt."
It was fun visiting, but we're glad we didn't get a taste of Lonesome Polecat's hospitality, which may include a leg of squirrel with a side of Hillbilly rage....
We hope you made the trip to Lonesome Polecat, because the Swink All School Musical returned to serve hilarious one liners, theatre filling musical performances and as usual cuteness by the bucket load.
Director's note: "Despite the title, we didn't fuss & Feud, but instead handled all sorts of difficulties wonderfully. I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to give them and you a return to live mixed grade, awesome theatre!"
