Obituary

Daniel Gordon Maes, 59, was born November 13, 1962 in Roswell, NM and was called to the Lord with his family by his side on February 4, 2022 in Yuma, AZ.

Dan grew up in La Junta, CO and graduated from La Junta High School 1981.  After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in an aviation specialty.  While serving in Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, he met his future wife, Martha Ann Terry.  They were later married on May 14, 1983.

After separating from the Marines, Dan worked as a contractor for LTV building aircraft components for Boeing.   Later, Dan returned to La Junta to continue his education at Otero Junior College, where he played on the OJC golf team.  He went on to Pueblo Community College to complete his degree in radiology, specializing in MRI, where he graduated at the top of his class.  Upon graduation he immediately started his career as an MRI technologist for 25 years.

Dan was a beloved grandfather who doted on his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed attending all of his kids’ and grand babies’ sporting events and functions.  Together they enjoyed time in the pool, on the golf course, and racing/camping in the sand dunes of California.  Memories of Dan (aka Grampa Dan, Papa, and Dan the Man) captured in photos memorialize his love of life and those around him.

He was beautifully eulogized by his son, Matthew Daniel Maes, as someone who always filled the gap in the lives of others.  Dan was a surrogate grandfather to young ones, a father figure to those who were without one, a friend to those in need, and touched the lives of those he encountered.  Beyond his love for family and friends, Danny was an avid golfer.  “Dan the Man” never shied from a golf invitation and frequently enjoyed golf trips with his friends and family.  A celebration of his life was held at the Desert Hills Golf Course in Yuma, AZ, where attendees speculated that Dan would rather be playing golf than attending his own memorial.  Dan was a member of the Desert Hills Men’s Golf Association.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Maes of Yuma, AZ; his children, Matthew Daniel Maes (Julissa Gomez) of Yuma, AZ; Carrie (Scott) Richards, and Ryan Bedoya of Yuma, AZ.

Grandchildren: Noah Daniel Maes, Isaiah Maes, and Ayden Gomez; Mackenzie (Eli) Hodges, Madison Richards, Jacob Richards, Mya Richards; and Vincent Bedoya, all from Yuma, AZ.

Mother Rita Maes of La Junta, CO; Brothers – Felix (Mary) Maes of Colorado Springs, CO; James (Janna) Maes of Miami Beach, FL; Michael (Jan) Maes of Orofino, ID; Sisters – Shirley (Matt) Perea of La Junta, CO; Janette (Robert) Schmidt of Colorado Springs, CO.

Numerous nephews and nieces.

Danny was preceded in death by his father Felix S. Maes; his father in law Wilson Terry, and mother in law Betty Terry.

Funeral Services were held February 18, 2022 at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church in Yuma, AZ.

Burial will be on April 8, 2022 at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, AZ with military honors.
