Bent County Historical Society Celebrates Its Members and it's Supporters

By Kathleen Tomlin

March 13. 2022

Bent County Historical Society held their annual meeting on March 12th with several members attending the luncheon and program. Dale Leighty offered a blessing before the meal, and we held a moment of silence for our many members who have passed, especially former board member, Don Headlee. Larry Tucker was thanked for his donation of the scrumptious roast beef for lunch, as well as all who contributed. Joyce Brooks, Board Secretary, was honored with an Honorary Lifetime Membership for her dedication to BHS for the past 13 years.

Joyce has served as board secretary, librarian, collections, exhibit design and many other assignments during her tenure. We held an election of board members: Kathleen Tomlin, President; Jaxon Meardon, Vice-President; Connie Harris, Treasurer; Donna Dodson, Linda Bourne, and Anita Pointon. New board members elected were Phyllis Lutz and Alta Mae Brown.

We honored and thanked our friends, partners, volunteers, and employees, who all help us on our historical path. Bent County Historical Society had 381 volunteers donate 5,842 hours last year, and we had 2711 visitors. Chris Headlee, web-site volunteer, provided data and we had an amazing number of 99,058 visitors view our website and virtual tours in the last 365 days.

Anita Pointon, Boggsville Director, provided an update on the restoration work at the Boggsville site that has been occurring over the past two years and will continue for a couple more. Boggsville is undergoing major, multi-phase efforts and the project team is now entering Phase III. This work is made possible by the continued, generous, financial support of the History Colorado State Historical Fund, Gates Family Foundation, National Trust’s Peter Grant Fund, Bent County, City of Las Animas, Daughters of the American Revolution, and our many other individual donors. Project support, to include grant writing and administration, is provided by Bent County Historical Society’s Boggsville partner, the Colorado Historical Foundation. Primary project contractors include Form Works Architects and Deep Roots Craftsmen. Anita gave a special thanks to three dedicated volunteer supporters of Boggsville – Harrell Ridley, Bill Long, and Larry Bourne. Following the business meeting, John Steinle, guest speaker, presented a fascinating program, “Pandemic on the Plains.”
