La Junta Primary School Arbor Day Ceremony

La Junta Mayor Joe Ayala and La Junta Parks and the Rec Department celebrated Arbor Day with the Primary School students and staff Wednesday morning.

During his presentation Ayala said, "...All of you can speak for the trees as well, trees are very important to us, they give us shade. This tree right here behind you was here when I went to school here, it was West School then..."

Ayala read an Arbor Day proclamation to the students and staff at the primary school and spoke to the benefits of trees. He said, "Trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community... Wherever they are planted, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal."

Further Ayala encouraged the children to be caretakers of trees.

Primary students planted a Bradford Pear Tree in memory of longtime School Nurse Amy Headlee.

"Amy was the Health Aide at La Junta Primary School for eleven years. She is dearly missed by staff and students, her memory will live on with this tree."
