The Las Animas VFW Post and Auxiliary would like to thank all the volunteers who helped with Memorial Day activities.

The response was AMAZING!  Starting on Friday, several youth from the Western Prairie 4H Group and many other friends helped place little flags on all the veterans graves at Bent County/Las Animas Cemetery.

On Memorial Day at 6:30 am, 180 flags were placed for the Las Animas Avenue of Flags.

At 8:00 am, 56 casket flags were placed at Fort Lyon National Cemetery.  At 7am, McClave and Hasty placed 30 flags for their very first Avenue of Flags.

Most flags had to be taken down early due to high winds, and many volunteers helped with that project at all Avenues.

Thanks to the many people that made the Memorial Day Programs at Bent County/Las Animas and Fort Lyon National Cemeteries possible.  Mardona Moreland; VFW Post #2411 & Auxiliary; Emilee Smith and Joziah Castro; Pastor Rod Coulter; Lane Brundage and Staff; American Legion Honor Guard Post #6; Fort Lyon National Cemetery Staff; Fort Lyon Veterans & friends; and the many volunteers who took the time to place and take down the Avenue of Flags.

God Bless our 655 fallen soldiers at Bent County/Las Animas Cemetery; the 2322 fallen soldiers at Fort Lyon National Cemetery; and all others buried in cemeteries in Bent County and everywhere.

We are so proud of Bent County’s patriotism, and for putting our fallen veterans first on Memorial Day.
