Celebrating Main Street Survey Results

In May and June 2022, an online survey was distributed via social media, posters, and handouts asking residents and visitors to weigh in on their thoughts about downtown La Junta.  It was called, “Celebrating Main Street.”

After sending the results to Colorado Main Street, the responses were tabulated and pulled together in colorful presentations for the public to enjoy.  La Junta came in second place for the most surveys in comparison to all the Colorado Main Street communities.

Here are some highlights:

·        Under “Desired Changes,” locals wanted more businesses, more local engagement, shaded benches, wayfinding, walkability, more restaurants, and restoration of older buildings.

o   We do have more businesses!  Since the survey closed, we have garnered a Pella Windows distribution center, DNAV, and KleinmakerSpace.

o   We do have more restaurants!  Again, since the survey closed, Steve & Tomie’s, the Opera House Pizzeria, and Yak and Yeti have opened to rave reviews.

o   We do have more local engagement!  Remember The Wizard of Oz production by Plays in the Park?  Or the upcoming The Art Project?  Or the brand new Tarantula Festival that is heading our way in October?  Or the re-emergence of First Friday Art Walk, slated to start up again in September 2022?  Don’t forget the outreach that was done in May and June 2022 to register just how many cultural creatives we have in town so that they can be better represented and supported.  And what about the soft opening of the new pocket park, Livewell Park?

o   Last but not least, we have six rehabilitated buildings that are ready for business thanks to the Main Street Open for Business grant AND the cash match contribution of the La Junta Urban Renewal Authority. Do you enjoy The Fox Theatre?  They have a new roof and other exterior improvements thanks to this grant.  KleinmakerSpace, the Opera House Pizzeria, and The Warehouse (upcoming Pella Window distribution center) were able to start their businesses thanks to rehabilitated spaces.  SoCo Froyo and the Lincare building are also in much better shape to conduct business with their building improvements.  The Presbyterian Church was just purchased this month and is showing steps towards rehabilitation already, and The Chestnut Apartments are in the middle of a renovation which is taking place daily.  We can do more, but let’s count our blessings!

Enjoy perusing what your peers decided were their primary wants, wishes, and appreciation for our city, La Junta.

One more thing

While we are celebrating new businesses, let’s not forget those businesses that have served us well for years.  The Lighthouse has been open since 2003 and carries a variety of books, gifts, and greeting cards and will order any book you desire.  The Aztec Arrow offers women's clothing, plus sizes as well as, shoes, purses, jewelry, home decor, Naked Bee and more.  Lastly, Junction Galleria 50 has 6400 square feet of books, primitive dolls, antiques, art, coins, jewelry, and more.  I know it is still warm outside, but Christmas is right around the corner.  Please SHOP LOCAL!
