57th Annual Bent County Historical Society Essay Winners Announced

Bent County Historical Society is proud to announce the winners of the 57th annual essay contest. This contest is called, “Giving Thanks to our Elders’ History.”

The rules encourage students to learn more about Colorado History in Bent County with research and personal interviews. Bent County 7th Grade winners from the Las Animas Middle School include: Bria Gardner, first place $35, for her essay, “Bill and Nancy.”  Armando Varela, second place $30, for his essay, “Bent County Jail/Prisons and Courthouse.” Mackenzie Hedglin, third place $25, for her essay, “The History of the Bent County Courthouse.” Summer Medina, honorable mention $20, for her essay, “Bent County Police Station.” The students read their winning essays on November 29th at the Grand Hall.

The winning essays are filed in the Heritage Library at the Museum. There were 16 essays submitted and judged.  We thank the panel of judges who were Phyllis Lutz, Sandra Milenski, and Donna Wolfe.

We especially thank the teacher, Tyson Vigil, for encouraging the students to participate. The winning essay will be published in the next Bent County Chronicle.
