LA JUNTA — Jared Polis, Colorado Governor, signed a proclamation on Monday, Feb. 15, declaring that the week of Feb. 15 to 19 to be Concurrent Enrollment Week in Colorado. Concurrent Enrollment is an innovative statewide program, launched by Colorado’s State Legislature in 2009, to provide more opportunities for more students to increase college-going rates by earning tuition-free, transferable college credit while they are still in high school.
Concurrent Enrollment courses are taught by qualified instructors at local high schools, on the college campuses, or virtually. This flexibility allows the program to be delivered in the manner that best serves the community it’s in. This dual-credit program allows students to simultaneously earn credit toward their high school diploma along with college credit toward an Associate degree or credit toward a career-focused certificate for eligible courses.
Since the launch of the program, the Colorado Community College System’s 13 colleges have become the state’s largest provider of Concurrent Enrollment – serving over 35,000 annually and creating supportive pathways to college for thousands of students, especially those from underrepresented communities. The majority of students who take concurrent enrollment classes typically complete two to three courses each semester throughout high school. Top enrolled courses include: English, math, literature, psychology, business, communications, and history.
To meet the needs of today’s economy and education landscape, OJC and other colleges around the state are committed to saving students time and money throughout their academic journey – and Concurrent Enrollment is a key program that allows us to do that.
There are several benefits to students taking Concurrent Enrollment courses, it not only gives students a jump start on earning college credits, but it also increases students’ confidence in taking college courses and could help change the mind-set for those who may have thought college wasn’t an option for them. It provides support. College can be intimidating for students. The beauty of Concurrent Enrollment is high school students are given access to college resources and support teams, like tutoring services in writing, English, and Math, and college advisors to help them succeed, just as if they were a full-time student attending the college. It saves money. These free college course translate to saving Colorado families over $35 million in tuition costs each year.
Concurrent Enrollment also saves students time as they may earn college credentials while still in high school. Colorado Community College System (CCCS) colleges award nearly 3,000 college credentials – certificates and associate degrees – annually to Concurrent Enrollment students – which gives them a significant advantage by being more competitive in the job market post high school and when applying to college. On average, concurrent enrollment students reduce the time it takes to complete a college degree by nearly one academic year!
Concurrent Enrollment is worth checking out! These tuition-free college courses count toward a high school diploma – so why not take advantage and knock out both? High schools across the state and in Otero, Bent and Crowley counties will begin registering students for the fall semester on March 22 through their guidance counselors.
