Community Rallies to Continue Supporting Ag Scholarships

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ......................................................... February 16, 2021

LA JUNTA — The Arkansas Valley Community continues to support Agriculture Students at Otero Junior College. The 2020 New Year’s Eve Ag Gala was cancelled, but that did not stop the support for the Agriculture Students attending OJC. Individuals and business up and down the Arkansas Valley donated a total of $10,600. These generous donations will be used for students pursuing degrees in the agriculture field.

The goal each year for the New Year’s Eve Ag Gala is to be able to continue assisting students who want to pursue degrees in the agriculture field with scholarship funds.  Last year’s event supported four students in the 2020-2021 school year.  Each student received $1,500 to help pay for tuition, fees and books. Sophomore scholarship recipients were Alison Bregar, Pueblo; Chris Wright, Downey, Idaho; Freshman scholarship recipients were Tag Moses, Keenesburg; and Hannah Cordova, Gardner.

Bregar stated, “This scholarship has allowed me to pursue my love and knowledge for agriculture, while following my dream of becoming an Agronomist. I really appreciate the community and the OJC Foundation for their support of the Ag Premiere Scholarship and helping students like myself, pursue a career in ag.” The scholars greatly appreciate the help they are receiving.

OJC and the Ag program would like to thank all of the amazing sponsors that will make the 2021-2022 scholarships possible. 2020 Ag Gala Platinum sponsors included; Beatty Canyon Ranch, Colorado Vet Clinic, Waddell and Reed Investment Services, Wallace Oil Company, and Welch Cattle Company. Next, the Gold sponsors; The State Bank, WW Feed and Supply, and Ag Risk Advisors. The Silver sponsors including; Dustin and Brooke Matthew and Pipeyard. The Turquoise level sponsors; La Junta Livestock Commission, First National Bank, Brett and Nancy Balenseifen, Fowler State Bank, and Dairy Queen. Finally, donations from SECO Ranch Planning and Richard and Betty White.

Brooke Matthew, lead instructor of the OJC Ag program and Ag Gala chairman, stated, “I am proud to call the Arkansas Valley/Southeast Colorado home. This community amazes me with their unselfish generosity and continued support. We look forward to seeing you at the 2021 New Year’s Ag Gala.”

The OJC Ag program is thankful for all of their Ag Premier/Gala sponsors and their contributions. Their continuous support and donations are greatly appreciated. The program looks forward to awarding scholarships to next year’s recipients as they continue their education in agriculture. The scholarship deadline is April 1 and more information can be found on the OJC webpage under scholarships.
