La Junta Police Department: Seeking Info on Bike Share Theft

LJPD is encouraging community members to report crimes...

SECO News contacted the La Junta Police Department in response to community outreach regarding the theft of the ride share bicycle wheels and parts at the Safeway bike station.

Numerous community members posted disheartening pictures of the stripped bicycle on social media and some even sent it to SECO News asking that we cover the story on Friday, July 8, 2022.

We responded by requesting information to release to the public from La Junta Chief of Police Todd Quick.

Quick informed SECO News that there had not been any reports made with the La Junta Police Department on the incident.

Chief Quick would like to remind the community that making a social media post about a crime you have witnessed or contacting the media does not alert the police.

In response to the call from SECO News editorial staff, and seeing that no report had been made on the incident, the La Junta Police Department contacted La Junta Economic Development Director Cynthia Nieb, as she was involved in the grant process for the bike share program that is facilitated through the Colorado Youth Initiative. Nieb filed a report with LJPD and an active investigation is currently underway.

If you have any information regarding the theft and damage to the Colorado Youth Initiative bike share property please contact the La Junta Police Department at (719) 384-2525.

Chief Quick would like to remind the community that crimes that go unreported also go unsolved. "If you see criminal activity in your community contact local law enforcement and report it. Posting to social media gets the word out, but it doesn't initiate an investigation." Quick said.

We encourage the community to submit their story leads and ideas to SECO News, but if there is a crime involved please report it to local authorities.
