Bent County Sheriff Investigating Otero Inmate Death 8/14/22

“August 15, 2022 – La Junta, CO.  On August 14th a 46-year-old male was found deceased in his cell by deputies.  Deputies and EMS responded to provide emergency medical treatment, however he was determined to be deceased by responders. 

The incident is believed to be related to drugs, however that will be determined during autopsy that will be performed by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. 

An Investigation into the incident is being conducted by an outside agency, in this case the Bent County Sheriff’s Office, and includes the Otero and Crowley County Coroners. 

The identity is not yet being released until confirmation that the next of kin have been notified.  He had been in our custody for less than 24 hours after being transferred from the Pueblo County Jail. 

This is still an active investigation, and more details may be released after receipt of autopsy and toxicology reports.  Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased.”
