LEGO “Building Trust Contest” Results

Tri-County Family Care Center sponsored their 21st annual LEGO “Building Trust” contest on Sunday, August 21st, 2022, in the Bingo building, at the Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds. LEGO kits were provided free of charge for the participants to keep.

This activity encourages parents or other adult sponsors to interact and be involved with youth.

The 44 teams with 88 people that participated included one child and one parent or adult sponsor and a couples’ division. The concept of the activity was to illustrate good communication skills and to build trust between the team members.

There were 10 teams in the Junior Division (ages 5-8): winners for 1st place were Gideon and his father Matt Wallace, Rocky Ford; 2nd place were Elizabeth and her mother Brittany Baca, La Junta; 3rd place were Malachi and his mother Michelle Blackwell, La Junta.

Sixteen teams were in the Intermediate Division (ages 9-12): winners for 1st place were Nicholas II and his father Nicholas Martinez, Rocky Ford; 2nd place winners were Cody and his mother Lynn Boskie, Rocky Ford; 3rd place winners were Avory Baker and her mother Ivy Hanagan, La Junta.

Eight teams were in the Senior Division (ages 13-17): winners for 1st place were Lilianna Farmer and her father Garyk Ontai, Rocky Ford; 2nd place winners were Kyler and his dad Eric Lagergren, La Junta; 3rd place winners were Nichole and her father Justin Quagliato, La Junta.

Ten adult teammates participated in the couples division with 1st place, Jennifer and Matthew Harmon, Rocky Ford; 2nd place, Ivy Hanagan and Jerid Baker, La Junta; 3rd place, Crystal Coffey, Fowler and Jeff Jackson, La Junta.

Each age category was given a certain amount of time to build the kit. The adult had to instruct the child on how to build that particular kit, without the child seeing the picture or reading the instructions. Each team was judged according to how well they communicated and how much of the kit was completed during the time allowed. For the Senior Division (13-17), the child read the instructions and the adult put the kit together. The couples decided who would instruct and who would build.

Trophies for first, second and third places were given for each age category and each team received a participation ribbon. Various prizes were available for the adult division winners to choose from. Each child participant entered the drawing for a grand prize, which was a LEGO John Deere 4WD Tractor building kit donated by 4 Rivers Equipment Company. This was won by Alec Baca. Judges were:  Don Sisneros, Julie Apodaca, Deborah Bourelle, all of Rocky Ford and Justin Quagliato, La Junta. Event was facilitated by Sarah Dillon, Executive Director, Marcellia Lopez-Flores, Registration Clerk and Harriet Menning, from Tri-County Family Care Center.

Thanks to the Knights of Columbus for being a financial sponsor.
