LJPD Reinstates Active Shooter-Mass Casualty Incident Response Initiation Team

The La Junta Police Department called on various city and community organizations to join them in emergency planning in the event of an active shooter situation in La Junta.

La Junta Police Chief Todd Quick hosted the event at The Jim Rizzuto Ballroom at Otero College Wednesday morning in La Junta. The first meeting resuming the active shooter-mass casualty incident response initiation planning was a meet and greet for the numerous organizations involved in bringing back the effort to protect the La Junta community in the event of the unthinkable.

The Response Initiation Team reinstatement is part of the La Junta Police Department's ongoing preparedness training to ensure the safety of our community.

The group included representatives from local law enforcement, Fire and EMS, City Transportation, and organizations involved in the reunification process after and during an event. The organizations involved in the reunification efforts included local school staff, victims advocates, behavior health, food service, parent volunteers, Otero College staff and several others unable to attend.

Previous exercises were conducted and planning meetings were held in 2018 and 2019, according to Quick, but it was put on pause by Covid-19 in 2020.

SECO News is actively working with the team to plan media staging and how to best use our network to reach the community while assisting other media outlets on the scene in the event of an emergency.

If your business or organization is interested in more information or finding out how you can help contact the La Junta Police Department at (719) 384-2525.
