Obituary

David E. Matthews, 74, passed away on September 20, 2022, at his Ordway home. He was born on September 29, 1947, in La Junta to Edward Francis & Edith Mae (Peltzer) Matthews.

He attended high school in Rocky Ford shortly thereafter he was called to serve in the Army. He was a Sergeant in the 1st Calvary Infantry, serving two tours in Vietnam. He received several service medals including two bronze stars and a purple heart.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked as a parts manager. He then went into business on his own pursuing his passion of working with his hands. He was a master craftsman in woodworking and carpentry. He even built his own home. He leaves a legacy of service, love, laughter and loyalty to his family and country.

David enjoyed spending time with his family outdoors, camping, fishing, target practicing, gold panning and pulling the winning jackpot at Cripple Creek. He was also an animal lover and often jokingly referred to as the dog whisperer in the house.

He was full of heart and said I love you every day through the kind acts of service to his family, friends and neighbors. He will be dearly missed but his legacy will live in our hearts and his service will continue through each of us every day. We know he’s already enjoying time with his father-in-law, Leland hitting the best fishing spots Heaven has to offer.

He is survived by his mother, Edith Mae Peltzer Herman; sisters, Patricia Martinez and Vera Matthews all of Rocky Ford; wife, Barbara of the Ordway home; daughter, Tammy Hopman of Ordway; son, David Wayne (Kelly) Matthews of Casper, WY; grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Francis Matthews; brother, Richard Leroi Matthews; as well as his loving grandparents, aunts, and uncles and nephew, Donald Smith. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, friends, neighbors, service buddies and beloved pets.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in La Junta with Pastor John Dell of the First Christian Church in Rocky Ford officiating. Visitation will be Monday, September 26, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel.
