Colorado State Patrol Press Release

Two Killed in DUI, Lane Violation Crash

(DOUGLAS COUNTY, COLO) - On Wednesday, Oct. 12 at approximately 10:30 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a motorist-assist request for four individuals experiencing vehicle trouble on northbound I-25 near Castle Rock in the acceleration lane.

A Colorado State trooper responded to the scene and was assisting the four-person party from Aurora with a missing tire on the shoulder of the road. During the motorist assist, two of the individuals in the party were instructed by the trooper to return to their vehicle and get back inside as a safety precaution.

Shortly after this conversation, the trooper was walking away from the two individuals whom were instructed to get back into the vehicle when a car took over the shoulder. The driver struck the two individuals killing them instantly then hit the guardrail ultimately disabling the vehicle. The driver then proceeded to stop at the scene and was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution and was later discharged.

The driver, a Castle Rock resident is presently under investigation and is suspected to have been impaired.  The individual was arrested on two counts of vehicular homicide and booked into Douglas County jail.

“Two lives ended due to one person’s choice to selfishly get behind the wheel while impaired,” stated Matthew C. Packard, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “This tragedy is another example of people failing to act responsibly, failing to make a plan for a sober ride, and failing to drive within their designated lane.  Five lives changed in the blink of an eye and it didn’t have to happen.”

Of the fatal crashes investigated by the Colorado State Patrol from January through July 2022, 21.6% were caused by a driver traveling outside of their designated lane and 18% were caused by a driver getting behind the wheel while impaired by alcohol, marijuana and/or other controlled substances.
