Students Showcase Business Ideas at 9th Annual Southeast Colorado Youth Entreprenuer Fair

Last week the Otero College Student Center was a hub of excitement when the participants of the 9th Annual SE Colorado Youth Entrepreneurship Fair (E-Fair) came to town to do “business."

The annual E-Fair event showcases business ideas of youth in 5th – 12th grades from public, private and homeschool from the six counties of SE Colorado,  Those business ideas - or the business the student may already have established – must all be ideas the student thinks will work in his/her rural community.

Over 100 students were present as participants or observers, and 54 student business ideas were showcased.  The twelve students with the winning ideas took home cash prizes.

High School winners included Cheraw students, Kieran Harris, DC Huff, Isabell Cahill, Remington Hansen, Eli Stokes, and Braden Stoker. Rounding out the high school winners were Christian Barnhart and Kevin Jaramillo from Swink, and Rueben Maldonado from Holly.

Middle School winners were Wiley students, Grant Mauch, Kendale Mauch, Samuel Mortimeyer, Landyn Weeks, Ivan Chavez, Eli Sandoval, and Carver Cross. Other Middle School winners included Anabelle Pettinger from Vilas, and Khloe Kuhn, a homeschool student from Crowley County.  Additionally, the Manzanola Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club) won as a group.

The 4-E Award (Entrepreneur Exhibiting Enthusiasm and Excitement) was presented to Luke LaBarge from Las Animas Elementary School.

Participants and observers enjoyed a day of interactive break-out sessions; videos, hands-on exhibits, lunch, and a keynote speaker, Mark Madic, from the Southern Colorado Innovation Link (SCIL) at Pueblo Community College.

Innovative Water Technologies recently received the "Coolest Thing Made in Colorado" Award from the Colorado Chamber of Commerce and Cisco Perez was grave a presentation to the student entrepreneurs.

Youth entrepreneurship in SE Colorado is growing, and students are excited by this activity.  The 10th Annual SE Colorado Youth E-Fair looks to be “bigger and better."  Watch for it coming up soon.
