Obituary

Maxine E. Fisher passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 24, 2022 at 11:12am.

Her son, Brian, was by her side during her finally days and when she took her last breath. She was 81 years young. While we are shocked, heartbroken and filled with grief, we know that she would want us to celebrate her life instead of mourning her death.

Maxine was born on August 31, 1941 in Spearville, KS. to her parents Walter and Thelma (Kleysteuber) Kurth. She was born and raised in Offerle, KS, a small farming community, and had so many wonderful memories and stories of growing up in central Kansas. The phrase “It Takes a Village” was never more true.

Maxine met her husband, Larry (who passed away in 2020), while attending Hutchinson Business School. She took many train trips from Kansas to La Junta, CO, “courting” Larry. Very progressive for the time. They married in 1961 and began raising a family with their son, Brian.

Maxine was the heartbeat of the family. Times were not easy for this young family in the early 60’s.

They were barely adults themselves when they started their family. Maxine and Larry were working parents and did all they could to support this family of three. They did much of the work themselves on their first home. She sewed and altered many of their clothes, cross stitched, and did many home crafts with Brian to keep him entertained. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker.

Maxine’s life spanned many decades in La Junta. During that time she and Larry owed a Montgomery Wards Catalog Agency and she later retiring from Otero Junior College. Much of the life of a wife and mother happens behind the scenes and is unnoticed by many. She was a very supportive wife and mother, the life force of the family, and encouraged both Larry and her son, Brian, in their volunteer work and careers.

She had strong spiritual beliefs to the very end, no matter what life would bring her way. She was a friend to everyone she met and a source of strength for all who knew her.

Being the kind, compassionate person she was, Maxine asks that in lieu of flowers, please smile at a stranger or brighten someone’s day whenever you can; the world needs so much more love.
Maxine did not wish to be buried so there will be no graveside or funeral service. Her son, Brian, will hold a private memorial and spread her ashes. She was a private person and preferred it this way.

She is survived by her son, Brian, currently in San Francisco, her brother Wayne, nieces, nephews and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, her brother Ronnie and sisters, Beverly and Kay.

In Loving Memory
