Obituary

Funeral services for Jean M. Fulton, 102, of La Junta will be held at the La Junta United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Lynne Tabb officiating. Interment will be at Ft. Lyon National Cemetery at 12.30 p.m. Mrs. Fulton died in Fowler, Colorado on December 9, 2022.

She was born a twin to Robert I. Riggs and Florence M. Riggs on December 20, 1919, in Pierre, SD. She grew up on a ranch 17 miles from town until 1932 when the family removed to Pierre. After graduating from Pierre High School in 1937, she enrolled in Dakota Wesleyan University and the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1943. She taught business subjects at Colton, S.D. High School for one year, and then worked as a secretary in the American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia, PA for three years before returning to the Midwest. She held a secretarial position with the law firm of Sifford, Wadden & Jepson in Sioux City, Iowa for a year before marrying William S. Fulton, Boy Scout Field Executive, in 1948.

Her husband’s career took them to Wichita, Kansas; Columbus, Nebraska; and La Junta, Colorado while they raised a family of two boys and two girls. When William Fulton died in an automobile crash in l973, the family remained in La Junta. As she made a home for her family, she also volunteered in her church as a Sunday School Teacher, on the Education Committee, Finance Committee, Nominations Committee and was active in the United Methodist Women’s organization, in Boy Scouting as a Den Mother, assistant to Den Mother Training Leader, Explorer Troop Leader, and in Girl Scouting as Troop Leader, Training Leader, Day Camp Leader. After her husband’s death she worked 15 years at Otero Junior College, retiring in 1988 as Administrative Assistant in the Business Office. Following that retirement, she was employed part time for five years as Finance Secretary for the La Junta United Methodist Church. In her later years she belonged to Prairie Piecers Quilting Guild and Daybreakers Toastmaster Club.

She is survived by her children, Mary L. Fulton (Steve Beale) of Boulder, CO; William (Katy) R. Fulton of Tracyton, WA; Thomas B. (Lora) Fulton of Broomfield, CO; Elizabeth A. (Samuel) Lopez, of Swink, CO; nine grandchildren, Guy Fulton, Anselma Lopez, Chad Fulton, Elena Kinnear, Noah Fulton-Beale, Will Fulton, Ben Fulton, David Fulton-Beale and Nate Fulton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Thomas L. Riggs and Donald T. Riggs; and sisters, Elizabeth (Charley) Gutch, Ruth (Carl) Morrison, and Roberta (George) Snyder.
