Obituary

Robert “Bob” Valdez, Jr., 86, passed away on February 8, 2023, at his La Junta home. He was born on September 14, 1936, in Las Animas to Robert, Sr. & Timotella (Griego) Valdez.

After Bob graduated from La Junta High School, he went to the Air Force where he served his four years, mostly on Baffin Island in Greenland. He also was in the Air Force Reserves. After returning he worked for the V.A. at Ft. Lyons and retired after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing softball and bowled for many years with local teams. He was an avid Broncos and Rockies fan, but also had a strong loyalty to his original teams the Brooklyn (LA) Dodgers and the Baltimore Colts.

Bob and Liz enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing and supporting the La Junta Tigers teams. He was known by many in the valley for his kindness and willingness to help others. Bob was called “Gramps” by his grandchildren and “Papa Bear” by his great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of La Junta; daughter, Denise (Burleigh) Castello of La Junta; granddaughter, Paula Sanchez of La Junta, her son, Diego Tenorio; grandson, Levi (Amy) Castello of Topeka, KS, their children, Alexander (Tayar Goins) Castello of Neodesha, KS and Kylia Castello; siblings, Paul (Dorothy) Jaquez of Denver; Josie Lovato of Las Animas; Dee (Joe) Encinias of La Junta; Henry (Pat) Valdez of La Junta; Leroy Valdez of Denver; numerous nieces & nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Robert Douglass Valdez, siblings, Helen Pino, Manuel and Tom Valdez.

Graveside service will be Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery with Father Joseph Matitu of Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish officiating. Military honors by the Rocky Ford Rifle Team, American Legion Post #8.
