La Junta Fire Department VS North La Junta Bridge Brush Fire

Around 947pm on Thursday LJFD was dispatched to a brush fire in the Hwy 50 Bridge on the East end of town. Upon arrival of the brush trucks they found a very large brush and debris pile burning by the arroyo directly under the bridge that Hwy 50 runs East and West bound lanes.

The debris buildup has been from the last couple of years heavy rain storms pushing trees and debris piling up. Crews used hand lines to work the piles. CDOT was called to have bridge specialist look at the bridge to make sure they were safe.

Porta tanks were set up and water shuttle ops took place to use water and foam to contain the fire. CDOT and La Junta PD assisted with closing down the highway for safe operations.

The cold temperatures of around 2 degrees was a big challenge. The cause of the fire was from a homeless camping area and the camp fire got out of hand. No injuries were noted. Crews should clear the scene around 0200am.
