Obituary

Fred Chavez 69, of Manzanola was embraced by his heavenly father on February 23, 2023 at Parkview Medical Center surrounded by his family. Fred was born March 26, 1953 in Fowler to Rosendo and Mary Chavez. He attended Manzanola Public Schools, where he met and dated Dolores Lucero until marrying her, the love of his life, on November 25, 1972 in Ordway. Fred enlisted in the Army in 1971 and was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. He was in the Infantry and a highlight of his military career was being appointed as security for the funeral of President Lydon B. Johnson in 1973. After his discharge from the Army, he and Dolores moved to Manzanola where they made their home for 50 years and raised their 2 daughters and grandchildren. Fred was a carpenter by trade and was always willing to help family and friends out with their projects. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and helping them out in any way he could, even trying to pass on his carpentry skills to them. He especially enjoyed taking them fishing and trying to teach them how to play chess and checkers. He loved playing pool, playing solitaire on his tablet, and watching western movies. He will be remembered for his sense of humor that could always bring a smile and a laugh to whoever was around him. He will be greatly missed by all.

Fred is survived by his Wife Dolores Chavez of Manzanola, daughters Melissa Chavez and Dawn Chavez of Manzanola; grandchildren, Brenden Chavez of Manzanola, Cheyenne (Sam) Montoya of Pueblo West, Michael (Brittney) Estrada of Manzanola, and Dakota (Samantha) Chavez, also of Manzanola; great-grandchildren Faith DeHerrera of Rocky Ford and Zayden Estrada of La Junta; 3 sisters Delphenia Ramos of California, Bertha Chavez and Patricia Castillo, both of Denver, brother Manuel Chavez of Nevada,; mother-in-law Virginia Lucero of Manzanola; sisters-in-law Lisa Reyes of Manzanola and Sandra (Joe) Valdez of Swink, as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
