CHARLES WILLIAM BUCK II

February 25, 1934 - March 19, 2023

Obituary

Charles William Buck II, of Fowler, Colorado entered into rest Sunday, March 19, 2023. He was born on February 25, 1934, in Fowler, Colorado, to Charles and Olive Buck. He was 89 years of age.

Charlie, as he was known by friends and family, graduated from Fowler High School with the class of 1952. He then went on to printers school in Kansas until falling ill from onset of diabetes, whereupon he returned home.

Charlie spent most of his career at the Fowler Tribune. Initially he worked for his mother Olive, publisher of the newspaper following the death of his father “CW” Buck (who published the newspaper for the first four decades of the century). Upon the retirement of his mother, Charlie co-published the paper with his sister Wilma Gager, a partnership that lasted three decades. While Wilma was running the front office, he ran the printing shop and drove up and down the Arkansas Valley selling advertising. Charlie was one given to congeniality, and “never met a stranger”. He was a natural salesman who relished cold calls, assisted by his sincere, friendly nature and folksy sense of humor.

Following his retirement, Charlie enjoyed traveling on his Gold Wing motorcycles, first the two-wheeled variety, then the tricycle versions as he got older. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow bikers, including fraternal police riding clubs.

In addition to motorcycles, Charlie was always building and flying model airplanes. He lived for a short time in Boulder, Colorado where he was cofounder of the Boulder Aeromodelling Society. He was a member of DeMolay International, the Jaycees and the Lions Club. Charlie was also a Boy Scout in his youth and was a Scout leader throughout adulthood. Charlie was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Fowler.

He is survived by Sharon (McGowan) Buck, his wife of forty-seven years; former wife Frances (Metzner) Vansyoc, and their children: son Carl W. Buck, daughters Michal A. Haywood, Kathleen E. Vansyoc and son in-law Greg, Sharon L. Cockayne, and by his sister, Wilma Gager. In addition, he leaves nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William Buck and Olive Margaret (Simpson) Buck, and by stepbrother and wife, Donald and Ruth Buck.

The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at Fowler Health Care for their tireless attention to Charlie, especially under the extraordinary circumstances of recent years.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on March 31, 2023 at 1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church, followed by a reception at the West Assembly of God Church, both in Fowler

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Johnson-Romero Family Funeral Home.
