Mary Sackett
Obituary
Mary Virginia Sackett was born on September 24, 1934, and passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, April 9, 2023. As Christ rose on Sunday, Mary also ascended to heaven on that day.
Mary was born in Eldon, Missouri, becoming one of seven children of Jacob and Norma Woody. The family moved to Colorado in 1944 and Rocky Ford was her home thereafter. Mary was a strong and independent woman born into an era that required grit and mettle to overcome many obstacles of her generation. If you knew her, you learned that she was quiet but tough. Her life’s journey enabled her to become her family’s anchor and friend.
Mary was a Boy Scouts den mother in 1966-1967 and she won a silver platter for her canned goods at the Arkansas Valley Fair. When her children were in school, she provided daycare for working mothers and watched over many of the neighborhood children, creating a close-knit community. Mary was pivotal in establishing Sackett’s Farm Market, working many hours to provide fresh produce for the Arkansas Valley and beyond. She went on to work for Hollar Seeds and ultimately retired from Pioneer Health Care Center after 18 years of service. She started in an entry level position, obtained an assistant dietitian certification, and continued to work her way up to Food Services Supervisor/Assistant Dietitian.
Mary enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and the residents at Pioneer. Fried chicken and chocolate cake were her signature dishes and requested for most family dinners. Besides spending time in the kitchen, Mary was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed knitting, and was an avid reader. She also loved to sit on her front porch and listen to her many windchimes in the breeze.
She was the proud mother of two: William Sackett Jr (Jacque) of Branson, MO, and Donna Allison (Raymond) of Rocky Ford, CO, and will be greatly missed by grandchildren Nichole (Randy) Magdaleno of Colorado Springs, Brad (Sara) May of Tulsa, OK, great-grandchildren Mason and Miles also of Tulsa, OK, and great-niece Kathryn Geiszler of Colorado Springs. Mary is also survived by two sisters: Ann Woody of Rocky Ford, and Linda McGuire of Colorado Springs. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Mae Williams and Helen Woody, and her brothers Edward and Jacob Woody Jr.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Rocky Ford Rural Volunteer Fire Department, c/o First National Bank, 300 N. Main St., Rocky Ford, CO 81067 and as Mary would say, “hug your family and puppies tight.”
