Bent’s Fort Chapter to tour Camp Amache

The Bent’s Fort Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association is planning a tour of the Amache Museum and Camp Amache (also known as the Granada Relocation Center) on Saturday, June 10. 

Chapter members will meet at the Amache Museum in Granada, 205 E. Goff Avenue (on Hwy 50), Granada, at 10:30 am.  At the museum John Hopper or one of his students will give a tour and discussion on how and why the Camp was opened and how he and his students got involved in the major project. The tour will continue at the Relocation site located a short drive west of the town of Granada. Just south of the entrance participants will meet for lunch and an opportunity to read the kiosks on site. Attendees are reminded to bring along lunch, chairs, and water. 

The preservation of Camp Amache is due in great part to the dedication of Granada High School history teacher John Hopper and his students for the last 30 years.  It is their dedication that the site has been restored, many artifacts found, contacts with former Japanese residents made, and the creation of the Amache Museum. As a result of their hard work, Camp Amache was recently designated a National Historical Site and is now covered under the National Parks Service.
