Bent County Sheriff Reports Mark Fox Still At Large

According to Bent County Sheriff Jake Six, the U.S. Marshal's Office is the lead investigating agency in the active search for escaped inmate, 46-year-old, Mark Desmond Fox and any leads discovered by local agencies will be given to them. Agencies including the Colorado State Patrol and Otero County Sheriff continue to aid in the active search.

Fox is one of four inmates who escaped the Bent County Jail some time Sunday evening or Monday morning, according to Six.

The inmates were being held on behalf of Otero County, as the Bent County Jail is contracted to hold Otero's prisoners while a new Sheriff's Office and Detention Center is being built, according to the Otero County Commissioners. The Otero Sheriff's Administrative Office is temporarily located in the 100 Block of Dalton Ave. in La Junta and the new jail and administrative office will be built in the same location as the existing building and empty adjacent lot on 2nd Street in La Junta.

The escapees were able to break out by making a hole in the sheetrock ceiling and climbing out through the back of the jail, according to Six, Bent County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call of a potential drug overdose and discovered that the inmates had escaped at 11:30 am on Tuesday.

The Bent County Sheriff's Office issued a BOLO with neighboring agencies and the Colorado State Patrol Tuesday morning after the escape had been discovered.

Escaped Inmate Benjamin Valdez was included on the original BOLO posted on the Bent Sheriff's Social Media, and was updated that as of 1:30 pm on Tuesday that he had been found in Pueblo deceased of a possible drug overdose.

On Tuesday afternoon, the CodeRed Alert System Notified Bent County Residents - "BC Urgent alert: Restrictions have been lifted. You may resume normal activity."

The Prowers County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the escape incident, according to Six.

The Public is Cautioned to Avoid Contact with Fox and Contact Local Law Enforcement if You Have Information About His Location.

Mark Fox is described as a white male, Bald, 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 210 pounds. Fox was recently sentenced to 64 years in prison and should be considered dangerous.

The public is urged to avoid contact with Fox and to call local law enforcement and report his location.
