Obituary

Serena Marie Herrera, 28, of La Junta, CO, passed away peacefully at her La Junta home on September 16, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born, September 6, 1995, in La Junta to Yvonne Herrera & Vincent Garcia.

Serena had many obstacles in her short life, but she tackled them head on with a loving smile that would brighten any room she walked into. A very big accomplishment, she graduated from La Junta High School in 2014. She didn’t know any other way to live life other than to be happy. If we all had the same amount of love and happiness, the world would be a better place. It’s the simple things in life that made Serena stand out from others. From coloring pictures and giving them to everyone that came across her, she also made sure you had a sticker or listening to her favorite music and dancing. She was truly the life of the party and never let a hard time bring her down. Serena leaves behind a legacy that will be lived through all the lives she touched. Even though she was small in stature, she had a big smile with an even bigger heart and can still love you unconditionally. Serena will never be forgotten as she will forever hold a piece of our hearts.

The family would like everyone who attends the services to wear purple in honor of Serena.

Serena is survived by her parents Yvonne Herrera & Vincent Garcia both of La Junta; siblings, Santino Herrera, Elijah & Angelina Garcia; uncles, Lorenzo Garbiso; Rufus (Candice) Herrera; Albert (Leslie) Vigil; aunts, Naomi (Floyd) Herrera; Jessica (Greg) Salas; Yvonne Bargas; grandparents, Pete (Rosie) Herrera; Janet (Jerry) Mata and Kathy Espinoza; special friend, Annabelle Marquez. She is preceded in death by her great-grandmothers, Rose Biggar; Molly Herrera; and special friend Ethan Noll.

Memorial Mass will be Friday, September 29, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish with Father Joseph Matitu officiating.
