Colorado State Patrol: 6 Injured in Hwy 266 Crash, Under Investigation

CSP Releases Crash Report: Hwy 266 Otero County Rd 25 Oct. 9, 2023

The Colorado State Patrol Public Information Officer reported that six people were injured in a single vehicle crash in Otero County and that the accident is under active investigation with alcohol being a suspected factor.

Colorado State Patrol responded to a report of a single vehicle accident on Oct. 9 at approximately 12:50 AM on Highway 266 near the intersection with Otero County Road 25.

Single Vehicle: Chevrolet Uplander SUV

Driver: 16 year old male of Oakley, Kansas, serious injuries, no seatbelt, was ejected and transported for medical treatment.

Passenger 1: 14 year old female of Ordway, Colorado, Minor Injuries, seatbelt was used, transported for medical treatment.

Passenger 2: 21 year old male of La Junta, Colorado, serious injuries, no seatbelt worn, ejected from vehicle, transported for medical treatment.

Passenger 3: 24 year old male of Sterling, Colorado, moderate injuries, no seatbelt worn, ejected from vehicle, and transported for medical treatment.

Passenger 4: 19 year old male of La Junta, Colorado, serious injuries, no seatbelt worn, ejected from vehicle, transported for medical treatment.

Passenger 5: 16 year old male of Ordway, Colorado, moderate injuries, seatbelt was used, not ejected from vehicle, transported for medical treatment.

Crash Narrative:

Vehicle 1 was westbound on Hwy 266 near mile post 6.3.

Vehicle failed to slow down and failed to negotiate a clearly marked left curve.

Driver steered hard to the left mid-curve causing the vehicle to rotate counter clockwise.

Vehicle travelled off the north side of the roadway colliding with a delineator post and curve indication sign before traveling down an embankment where it began to roll.

Vehicle rolled approximately two times, coming to rest on it's wheels facing Southeast. 

The incident is still under investigation according to the Colorado State Patrol Public Information Officer, at this time alcohol is suspected, however, excessive speed is not suspected.
