Obituary

Helen Walters Smith of Fowler died at Fowler Health Care Center on November 1, 2023, where she had been a resident for some time. She was born in Sugar City on April 21, 1930, first daughter of Cyrus 'Sox' Walters and Frances Hambleton Walters. Family was later joined by Lola Lu, Bea and Jeanne. She graduated from Sugar City High School in 1948.

On January 16, 1948 at Clayton, NM she married Kenneth Smith of Manzanola, a union which happily lasted until his death in 2015. Couple produced three sons: Kenneth Alan, David W. and Eric D. In 1963 she began a 'career in home-town banking' with her employment at J. N. Beaty Bank in Manzanola. She retired from Fowler State Bank many years later, having gained the trust and friendship of many, many people up and down the Arkansas Valley. She also worked for a period of time as 'survey statistician' for USDA, working from the Lamar location.

She was a long-time member of the First Christian Church, Manzanola; She also attended the Wiley and Lamar Methodist Churches, and recently the Fowler United Methodist Church. She is survived by sons Alan (Shirley), Dave (Cheryl) and Eric, all of Manzanola. Also surviving are grandchildren: Darren, Brian, Jeff, Michelle, Hank, Lisa, many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Lois Smith of Fowler, brother-in-law Tomas Munoz of Prescott Valley, AZ, cousin-in-law Richard (Judy) Smith of Pueblo, and numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded into glory by her parents, Sox and Frances Walters, parents-in-law Dave and Estelle Smith, sisters Lu Munoz, Bea (Ted) Leal, Jeanne (Bob) Knight, in-laws Gene Smith, Martha and John Bitter, and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded by her grandparents Charlie and Lucy Walters and Frank and Lola Hambleton, and her "special uncle" Roscoe Walters.
