Bent County Sheriff Releases Hwy 50 Standoff Incident Report

On Saturday, November 25, 2023, at approximately 1130, deputies of the Bent County Sheriff’s Office responded to Highway 50 at the Bent/Otero county line for a report of a man menacing and firing a weapon inside of a vehicle. As more information became available, officers were made aware of the possibility that the individual claimed he wanted to engage in a “shoot out” with law enforcement.

Numerous officers from five agencies arrived to assist with the situation.  Burlington Northern Railroad was notified to stop all trains moving through the area due to the proximity of the vehicle to the tracks as well as the unknown nature of the event and the intent of the individual involved.

Law Enforcement began to give commands to the suspect. After an numerous attempts, over the course of an hour, to establish communication with the individual and getting no response, the individual finally exited his vehicle and surrendered to officers without incident.

Agencies involved were Colorado State Patrol, Bent County Sheriff’s Office, Otero County Sheriff’s Office, La Junta Police Department, La Junta Fire Department and Colorado Division of Wildlife.

ALL SUSPECTS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY IN A COURT OF LAW.
