OTERO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE & DETENTION CENTER SET FOR “WALLBREAKING”

LA JUNTA, CO (November 30, 2023) – On Monday, December 4th at 1:00pm the Otero County Sheriff’s Department and Nunn Construction will be ceremonially demolishing a wall at the current Sheriff’s Office Building to officially kick-off construction of the new Administration Building and Detention Center. This project will be constructed in multiple concurrent phases with an estimated budget of over $17 million. Scheduled for completion in late summer of 2024, the new 4,555 square foot Administration Building will include such features as new staff offices, evidence storage, an interview room, and more confidential areas for the public and visitors. Concurrently in construction and scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2025, the new 13,580 square foot Detention Center will include an elevated booking counter, interview room, separate juvenile holding, and a wider range of cells, sleeping rooms and housing units with 60 beds, as well as video visitation technology. The new design of this Detention Center increases efficiency for staff, allowing them to supervise more areas of the housing units and dayrooms and also incorporates more medical and behavioral health service areas for prisoners.

This project began when RJA (Reilly Johnson Architecture) and Otero County collaborated on Otero’s County’s master plan which included this project in 2018. Nunn Construction and RJA were selected as a Design/Build team in September 2022 to work with Otero County to further work on the design and construction of the new Administration Building and Detention Center. In a challenging economic market, this integrated team was able to work with the County in developing a design that updates their facility, making it more secure and efficient. The facility includes a wider range of housing that aims to reduce recidivism and to make inmates’ transition and reintegration back into society more successful.
