Obituary

Donna L. Berg, 86, of La Junta, CO, passed away on January 4, 2024, at Crowley County Nursing Care Center. She was born June 20, 1937, in Versailles, Missouri, to Roscoe and Hazel (Bradshaw) Moritzky.

Donna grew up in Platte City, MO, area where her dad worked for Fairview Farms. She graduated from Dearborn High School in 1955. She met Lawrence Berg through a friend and they were married at Fairview Farms on May 20, 1956. Lawrence worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and they moved several times -- Riverside, MO; Edwardsville, KS; Wichita KS -- before moving to La Junta in 1969. Lawrence was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer early in 1987 and passed away in August of that same year.

Donna went to work for Arkansas Valley Community Center for Handicapped and Retarded Persons Inc./Girch Center in 1976. She retired in 1989 to take care of her aging parents. After the passing of her parents, she traveled extensively – Europe, Australia, Tahiti, and the continental US. One of her favorite things to do was to be involved with her grandchildren – school programs, sporting events, church programs/activities – and gardening. She once planted a quarter-acre garden! Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she decorated her home extravagantly. The family would gather on Christmas Eve for a homemade meal, the reading of the birth of Jesus, as well as a visit from Santa Claus, aka son Mark. After selling her home and renting for several years, her health began to decline. She was a resident of Crowley County Nursing Center from January 2020 until her death.

Donna is survived by her children, Mark (Lynda) Berg of Pueblo, CO, Dennis (Karen) Berg of Sterling, CO, Darron (Debbie) Berg of Greeley, CO, and Marvin (Danelle) Berg of La Junta, CO; grandchildren, Frank, Denice, Jeremy, Kurt, Kara, Kyle, Lynde, Caitlin, Christopher, Ethan and Jerod; 17 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Leta Pukay of Kansas City, MO; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Berg, parents, Roscoe and Hazel Moritzky, and granddaughter, Kylie Berg.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be Friday, January 12, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene in La Junta, CO, with Reverend Mark Callister officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in La Junta, CO.
