Obituary

Jeffrey Scott Watkins, 59, of Cheraw, CO passed away at his Cheraw home on the morning of January 28, 2024. He was born January 15, 1965 in La Junta, CO to Steve & Linda (Cagle) Watkins.

Jeff was born in La Junta and raised in Cheraw Colorado, where he attended Cheraw School from kindergarten through 12th grade. He went on to attended diesel mechanic school in Pueblo. After graduating diesel mechanic school Jeff worked for Romer Young John Deere in Holly, CO. While working in Holly he met his future wife Anita Mead, they were married on April 19, 1986.

In November of 1988, Jeff & Anita had their first child Ashley Lynn, the family moved back to Cheraw in the fall of 1989 where he went to work for Russler Implement in Rocky Ford. In January of 1990, Jeff began working for Otero County Road and Bridge. In November of 1991 he and his wife welcomed a baby boy, Jarred Scott. In 2005 Jeff became the Distrcit 1 Foremen where he remained until his death.

Jeff enjoyed fishing, farming and working on machinery. He loved playing practical jokes with his co-workers and friends. He never knew a stranger and was always willing to help anybody with water line issues.

In 2015 Jeff became a grandfather to Paysen James Crowder and again in 2018 to Paxten Jeffrey Crowder, where they later came up with the name Papa and Poppi. He took great pride in being a grandpa and wanted to teach the boys everything he knew about machinery. Jeff and Jarred worked the last few summers together on the Watkins family farm and began expanding their operation. He had no plans for retirement, except to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all.

Jeff is survived by his wife Anita Watkins of the Cheraw home; daughter, Ashley (Jeff) Crowder of La Junta, CO; their children, Paysen & Paxten Crowder; son, Jarred Watkins of Cheraw, CO; parents, Steve & Linda Watkins of Cheraw; sister, Debbie (Joseph) Martinez of Des Moines, NM; nephews, Tabor (Anahy) Martinez; Chad (Lacy) Lawrence; nieces, Dakota (Dago) Chavez; Kayla (Bret) Harkness; 2 great-nephews & 2 great-nieces. He is preceded in death by his maternal & paternal grandparents.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Prayer Service at 10:00 a.m. with Deacon Doug Manley officiating, both services at Peacock Memorial Chapel in La Junta. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in La Junta.
