Bent's Old Fort NHS Update from Park Superintendent Eric Leonard

"Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site remains committed to preserving Bent’s Old Fort and the story of its significance in America’s history."

"The park is undergoing a period of transition to manage operations at the Fort in a way that allows us to continue to tell the Fort’s story while prioritizing public safety and animal welfare."

"A 2006 Long-Range Interpretive Plan (Download Below) and Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site Dec 2023 Operations Review identified concerns with the park’s capacity to safely and successfully manage a livestock program."

"As a result, the park has committed to reducing the number of livestock kept at the fort year-round and explore alternative options such as leasing livestock during the busier summer season to ensure that animals continue to play a role in the story of the Fort."

"Additionally, issues stemming from 45 years of use and certain deficiencies in the original reconstruction of the Fort have resulted in necessary closures of the upper levels of the Fort for safety. As we work on internal planning, park staff and our dedicated volunteers will continue to connect with the public in engaging and meaningful ways through a combination of living history programs and other interpretive programming as we work to restore access and create new connections to this incredible place."
