Otero College Welcomes Rick Brown as New Head Volleyball Coach

LA JUNTA — Otero College is pleased to announce the hiring of Rick Brown as the new head volleyball coach. He began his duties on March 4. With 12 years of coaching experience, Brown brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the program.

Brown's coaching career began at Eastern Wyoming College, where he spent five years helping the team accomplish over 200 wins and make two trips to the NJCAA National Tournament. Since then, he has coached at various levels including high school, community college, NCAA DII, and NAIA. Most recently he was the head coach at Central Baptist College in Conway, AR. Under his guidance, the team achieved its first winning season in 17 years and made history by becoming the first CBC volleyball team to qualify for post-season play in a non-COVID year. Five players, the most ever, earned All-Conference awards, including two First Team selections and the AMC Defensive Player of the Year. Four of his student-athletes earned All-Academic Team Honors, with two earning NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athlete recognition.

Coach Brown is eager to come back to the college scene and become a part of the Otero College community. Having graduated from a community college himself, he is well prepared for his new position. Hailing from Torrington, WY, he completed his AAS in Information Systems at Eastern Wyoming College before transferring to Northern Arizona University for his BSBA in Information Systems.

"One thing I've always loved about the community college experience is how inclusive and welcoming the communities are with the students," said Brown. "The communities make the transition from the familiar to the unfamiliar so much easier. When families open their homes and lives to students, lifelong bonds are created."

As the new head volleyball coach, Brown is eager to lead the Otero College team and continue to continue the traditions of support and a family-like atmosphere for the student-athletes. His passion for coaching and dedication to creating a positive experience for his players make him a valuable addition to the Otero College Athletics Department.
