South-Central and Southeast Colorado — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner Road Safe Traffic will began striping multiple highways in southeast Colorado on March 4.

Crews will remove existing pavement markings, add rumble strips, and add new striping and markings. The pavement striping and marking will make traveling conditions safer providing brighter, more visible lines. Rumble strips produce noise and vibration to alert drivers when they leave the travel lane. They are an effective measure for reducing roadway departure crashes.

The project is expected to be complete by November 2024.

The project will take place across South-Central and southeastern Colorado in Summit, Park, Douglas, Teller, El Paso, Las Animas, Huerfano, Bent, Prowers and Pueblo Counties on the following highways:

• CO Highway 9, north of Fairplay (Mile Point 71 - MP 80)
• CO 67, north of Woodland Park (MP 78.58 - MP 100.03)
• CO 105, between Monument and Palmer Lake (MP 5.29 - MP 9.48)
• CO 24, between Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs (MP 303 - MP 303.84)
• I-25, several locations along the corridor (MP 0 - MP 15.5, MP 58 - MP 59, MP 109- MP 101.06, MP 137 - MP 145)
• CO 21, North of Fountain (MP 131- MP 140)
• CO 16, in Fountain (MP 0 - MP 3.2)
• US Highway 160, La Veta Pass (MP 282 - MP 286.43)
• CO 109, between Kim and La Junta (MP 0 - MP 31)
• US 50, between Las Animas and Lamar (MP 405 -MP 433)

Traffic Impacts

Motorists and area residents can expect the following impacts during construction:

• The first two weeks work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Then work will take place nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.
• Various mobile lane closures will take place within the work zones with reduced speeds.
  Plan ahead and expect short delays.
• This is a swift moving, mobile operation - while work zones will only be in place for a few hours, motorists are urged to use caution and watch for heavy equipment
• Through lanes and turn lanes may be temporarily closed to traffic causing brief travel delays
• Travelers are discouraged from passing the striping truck and crossing over fresh paint, as this may damage a vehicle’s finish. Please drive with patience during striping operations.
• Construction schedules could change depending on the weather.

• Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
• Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
• Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
• Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
• Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
• Be patient!
