Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Margaret Madrid, a cherished member of the La Junta community. Margaret, 73, peacefully departed this world on March 20, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family in her Lakewood home.

Born on July 21, 1950, in La Junta, Colorado, Margaret was the beloved daughter of Enrique and Juana Aguilar. On March 3rd, 1972, she embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship with her soulmate, Val Madrid, who preceded her in death. Together, they nurtured two wonderful children, Gerri and Guyo Madrid, and reveled in the joys of grandparenthood with their four adored grandchildren: Nick and Nate Madrid, and Dulcie and Jameson Davis.

Margaret's faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she found solace and community in her devotion to the Catholic Church, notably at Our Lady of Guadalupe & St. Patrick Catholic Church in La Junta. For over 40 years, Margaret dedicated herself to serving others as a legal assistant at Colorado Legal Services, leaving an indelible mark on all those she encountered with her infectious warmth and kindness.

The Madrid home, a beacon of hospitality across from the Catholic Church, was a gathering place for friends and family alike, where countless celebrations and cherished meals were shared. Margaret's open heart and welcoming spirit ensured that anyone who crossed her path was embraced as family.

Margaret leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will forever endure in the hearts of those who knew her. She is survived by her loving children, Geraldine (Omar) Madrid-Davis of Alexandria, VA, and Val (Stacey) Madrid Jr. of Lakewood, CO, as well as her godson, Angel (Katrina) Navarro, and her dear grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Carmen (Val) Candelario, Juana (Al) Baca, Helen Kelly, and Pilo Aguilar, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

In addition to her husband, Val Madrid, Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Terry Zammaron, Henry Aguilar, Mary Martinez, Raymundo Aguilar, Nick Aguilar, Sally Ortega, and Natalia Lawson.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:00 a.m. both services at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish in La Junta, officiated by Father Joseph Matitu. Margaret will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in La Junta following the services.

In honoring Margaret's memory, let us carry forward her legacy of love, hospitality, and unwavering faith, keeping her spirit alive in our hearts forevermore.
