Hi-Teens - A Safe and Empowering Community for Young Women

By Liyah Madrid

If you’re a young woman (high-school aged), and you’re looking for a community to belong to, look no further than Hi-Teens at La Junta Jr./Sr. High School! Led by the capable and dedicated Eva Rodriguez, Hi-Teens is a group exclusively for young women to unite and support each other. With the help of class representatives, Hi-Teens provides a space for young women to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and create lasting friendships. By joining Hi-Teens, you can join a community that uplifts and empowers each other.

During April 2024, Rodriguez and a group of class representatives coordinated a clean-up initiative that spanned from the 1st to the 4th, with an additional day on the 12th to allow Hi- Teens to make up for any missed meetings. The clean-up effort centered around the Junior/Senior High School, and on the 12th, the Hi-Teen ladies visited the Colorado Army National Guard. With the Colorado Army National Guard, there were 2 sessions--one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Rodriguez agreed to an interview about the clean-up that happened on April 12. "We left the school at 8:00 am. Once we arrived at the Colorado Army National Guard, we started to get working at 8:30 am."

"Isabella Ortiz, Acynn Good-Coates, Sophia Reger, Jackie Becerra, Jasmyne Trujillo, and Alexis Garcia participated in the Friday clean-up. The Colorado Army National Guard provided all the cleaning supplies that were needed to clean."

"The purpose of this whole clean-up to the Colorado Army National Guard was first, to offer community service and second, the girls who participated were able to use these hours to make up missed meetings."

The Hi-Teens program has organized an exciting end-of-school-year field trip to Boondocks in Parker on May 28th. Participants will depart on a bus promptly at 8:00 am and return by 6:30 pm. To be eligible, Hi-Teens ladies must have caught up on their meetings and contributed $15 towards the trip's expenses.
